Acupuncture is gaining acceptance as a means of improving back pain. Back pain may be caused by lifting or carrying heavy objects, spending long periods sitting in one position ( eg using a computer or driving) or by bending and twisting awkwardly.

This can result in ligament strain, muscle tear, damage to a spinal facet joint or prolapse of an intervertabral disc. Muscles around the damaged tissue may spasm resulting in further pain and inflammation. This may delay or completely hinder the recovery process.
Research has shown that acupuncture may help stop pain, reduce muscle spasm and reduce inflammation. As a result, the recovery time may be faster.
